Irish Language Summer Camp August '10
For the ninth year in a row there will be an Irish language summer camp in Loughrea. The main aim of the camp is that children enjoy themselves as they learn and improve their Irish while they are having fun. Qualified teachers will be in charge of the camp and will use games, role-play, art, quizzes and much, much more to make language learning an enjoyable experience.
There will be a low teacher-pupil ratio to ensure that supervision is a high priority. The camp is being organised by the local Irish language office, Gaeilge Locha Riach, and will run for two weeks, from the 9th to the 20th of August, at a cost of €95. Preference will be given to those registered for the full term of the camp. Of course, there will be small discounts for those coming from families and it is possible to book for just one week. Judging from previous years demand for the camp will be high, so parents are being advised to book early.

Plenty of fun at the Campa Samhraidh
August 2009
There was a lot of spóirt, fun and ‘craic go leor’ at the Campa Samhraidh in Baile Locha Riach again this year. Almost 40 students enjoyed the Irish Language summer camp that took between the 10th and 14th August in Gaelscoil Riabhach in the town.
Gaeilge Locha Riach organized the camp that was funded by Foras na Gaeilge. Caitríona Ní Ríordáin was the director of the course and a few others helped out over the week; Elaine De Faoite and Nóra Ní Fhlannagáin. Everyone seemed to have plenty of fun with games, sport, role-play, artwork, music, singing, drama and a lot more organized over the week.
As well as this, a number of visitors came to the camp and organized special workshops that proved to be very enjoyable. Úna Ní Fhlannagáin took charge of a music and sean-nós dancing workshop and a special art workshop was conducted by Áine Uí Fhlannagáin. Everyone seemed to reap the benifit of the cookery workshop directed by Gabrielle Uí Ríordáin, with pancakes and cakes on the menu. There was great emphasis on sport during the week and great interest in the hurling skills taught by Brian Mahony.
There was a very enjoyable trip organized to Bridgets Garden, Ros Cathaill, Maigh Cuilinn where they were all given a great welcome and taken on a guided tour of the gardens. They had a lovely picnic on the grounds and the opportunity to do a spot of fishing, play a few more games and enjoy the fine weather.
It must be said that there was a wide attendence at the Campa Samhraidh with a particular welcome to the Mac Conmidhe family from Béal Feirste and Kirwan’s travelling from Tipperary. Of course, most of those attended from the east galway locality
As the camp came to a close, friend and family were invited to attend a special performance which the children had been rehearsing throughout the week. It seemed that everyone really enjoyed the singing, dancing and drama of the show. Yes, there was plenty of fun at the camp .... folk are already asking about ‘Campa Samhraidh 2010’! |
